Forecasters are saying an icy start to the new year, with snowfall expected across much of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Proceed Amid Warnings

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay festivities are set to take place, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the weather service.

Fireworks Under Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be chilly, making additional clothing essential, as per forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, advisories are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• The public have been urged to leave additional time for trips on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on public transport.

Readings Forecast to Drop Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Advisories Activated

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this indicated the weather could to cause notable consequences across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.

The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is absolutely paramount.
