Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
