Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities shared security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a child.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
