Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
