Our team is verifying video footage and photographs shared earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to check the site from which the images were from relied on social media reports saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
