Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Alleges Unilever Blocked Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
One of the co-founders of the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the business with Jerry Greenfield, announced that he will independently develop the controversial flavor within an individual collection highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Dispute Between Creators versus Parent Company
The recent announcement deepens the continuing conflict between the internationally recognized ice cream maker and Unilever, the British packaged goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders have asserted that the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company from "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen stated via social media that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions regarding the product's name and additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder declared in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for support for Palestinians because of its coloration, which match those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally created in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts plus Upcoming Intentions
The founder indicated that he will create additional ice cream flavors that address concerns which the company was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades with the organization, citing concerns that the company's autonomy was undermined after corporate moves to curb its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to keep working inside the company to fight for its independence so that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
